Heels Technique Basics: Posture, Walk, Balance (Beginners)
Heels choreography gets easier when technique improves—even a little. Start with three foundations: posture, walking, and balance.
Posture cues
Think “tall spine, soft ribs, relaxed shoulders.” Beginners often grip or tense up. The goal is strong but not stiff. If you’re wobbling, you usually need more calm posture—not more effort.
Walk drills
Practice slow, intentional steps. Small steps > big steps. Focus on placing your foot confidently and transferring weight smoothly. The goal is “controlled,” not “fast.”
Balance strategies
Use a focal point (spotting) and keep weight centered. Beginners often lean forward in heels—bring your weight back into your hips and core. Take breaks: fatigue makes balance worse.
Practice plan for week one
Do five minutes a day: posture check, slow walks, a few pivots. Then bring those cues into class. Consistency builds confidence faster than a single big practice session.
